Can SC+ examine a document (text file) and pick out words and phrases, especially words and phrases that are used more than once? It would be great if the list that is produced would show how many times the word or phrase appears?

This would be very helpful to create a large glossary quickly for someone new to SC+. This would result in a glossary that is based on the new user's words and phrases.

This is an interesting idea Bill. At this point in time Spell Catcher (the Windows version) only accumulates phrases based on what it has observed being typed. The means to load a phrase list by analyzing selected text is certainly something that could be added.

At this point in time I’d like to know what people think in general about Phrase completion... is it useful, or is it a feature that you have disabled?

As you may/may not know, this feature only exists in the Windows version of Spell Catcher. It was added as an experiment, just to see how well it has been received.

So far I’ve not heard many positive things for people about this feature. If it’s something that you find useful, please let me know and I’ll consider future enhancements... otherwise my tendency is to leave it as it currently stands.

John,
I'm trying to use the Phrase Completion feature. I typed a popular sentence that has long been used in typing courses:

now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country

When I typed it again, I didn't see this in a suggested phrase list. Why not? I did notice as I typed that I'd see two words appear in the list, but that's not what I expected.

Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks,

Hi Bill,

The phrase completion feature watches what you type. As you type, single words and word pairs are recorded and presented to you subsequently if you stop typing mid-word. Longer phrases are also compiled when the phrase suggestion popup is used to create longer phrases... so with use, this feature will become familiar with words, word pairs, and perhaps phrases that you frequently type.

What I’m not sure of is how much this feature is used by people. My belief is that not to many make use of this feature, finding it quicker to use shorthands or just type what they want rather than waiting for Spell Catcher to present suggestions as to how a partially typed word may be completed.

Unless I hear otherwise, no additional work is planned on this feature.

John,

Thanks for your reply. I need some help to implement what I think you are telling me exists in the program.

You said:
"Longer phrases are also compiled when the phrase suggestion popup is used to create longer phrases... so with use, this feature will become familiar with words, word pairs, and perhaps phrases that you frequently type."

For example, how would I add the following phrase to the "phrase suggestion pop-up"?

"now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country"

I don't want to have to type the phrase "frequently" in order for it to be recognized. I would like the whole phrase to appear in the list as I begin typing "now is the ..."

Thanks,

Hi Bill,

The phrase completion code only really remembers single words and word pairs that have been typed. When the phrase completion popup is used longer phrases are created automatically by adding phrases together to create longer phrases; however phrase lengths are limited to 5 words so the phrase “now is the time for...” is too long for phrase completion to suggest.

There is no convenient way to easily add phrases into the phrase collection... the idea being that it accumulates words and word pairs as you type instead of loading them up ahead of time - that’s what shorthand expansions are for.

There is an overlap between phrase completion and shorthand expansion, with more complicated (longer) phrases more easily added to a document using shorthand expansion. The intent of phrase completion is just to collect recently typed words and word pairs. It should provide a means of more easily adding commonly typed phrases into shorthand reference, but that isn’t there right now.
