I‘m sorry if this is a stupid question, but I can’t figure out how DirectCorrect is “an entirely new way to check your spelling.” It’s a cool effect, but functionally isn’t it almost identical to the built-in “Check spelling as you type” option? (Well, that combined with the grammar-checking option.) If turned on only when one is done typing, it seems to duplicate the “Check document now” command.
A few things come to mind:
- Results are virtually instantaneous.
- Errors (well, given the right settings) are clearly visible, and highlighted in color according to type.
- Making corrections is fast and simple (but could probably be better - I have a few ideas).
- Independent of Spell Catcher's (or the Mac OS X speller's) interactive/as-you-type spell checking.
- Easy to get a summary of what was checked, how many errors were found, and other sometimes-useful information (DirectCorrect inspector, tooltips on highlighted errors).
- It's pretty damned cool (IMHO).
- Remember this is really the only "version 1.0" feature in the product. Much more will be possible in the future.

As a separate matter, is there any way to make it not pass judgment on a string of letters until some separator character has been typed? If I type
See you at the theater, I get a light-show — for example,
theater gives me green as I type the
t, nothing as I type the
h (as SC seems to count
th as a word), blue as I add the
e, and then red for
a,
t, and
e; until finally it becomes normal after the
r.
Though very groovy, this is also sort of distracting.

Sure, see if deselecting the preference to "Highlight at insertion point" (disclose the advanced controls pane in the DirectCorrect inspector) is less distracting.
Don't forget that you can always turn DirectCorrect on and off at any time.
There are a number of useful keyboard shortcuts as well,
take a look at the documentation to find out more (shortcuts are described near the bottom).
And please, post your feedback and ideas here in the DirectCorrect subforum, or email us at our directcorrect at rainmakerinc dot com address.
