[Spell Catcher X v10.3.2, Mac OS 10.6.2, MacBook Pro2,2, 3 GB RAM]
All of a sudden, none of my shorthands are expanding properly in my Eudora v6.2.4. When I enter the shorthand and then space, the shorthand is erased and replaced with a single, lower-case "a".
All the shorthands still work fine in other applications such as Word 2004 (v11.5.6) and Pages '09 (v4.0.3). For what it's worth, I haven't had any reason (at least deliberately) to try to modify in any way my Eudora installation and, while I can't pinpoint just when this shorthand problem began, I do ensure everything that Software Update proposes for my computer are installed. (The last such installation was the "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1" on 3 Dec 2009.) I haven't noticed any other misbehavior by Spell Catcher X for me.
The first thing I did in the Spell Catcher X Preferences was to disable the "Make replacements directly (without backspacing) where possible" (Interactive->Typing), but the behavior remained the same as when it had been enabled. I then deleted Eudora from the list of applications with non-universal settings and re-created the non-universal settings, but I still am not getting any shorthand to expand properly.
Suggestions requested.

Has this worked since installing Snow Leopard? If more recent than that, can you think of anything non-Apple that you've installed or updated recently?
Do spelling corrections get made properly?

I thought it had, but now am not sure. (Sorry about not knowing that rather significant fact.)
Several maintenance utilities (e.g., Cocktail, Onyx), Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, but probably many more.
I had Auto-Show Suggestions disabled (so I was only prompted with the "Curious" sound), but when I just re-enabled it (with the Suggest Spelling Window option), I find that I get the comparable problem: When I choose the correct spelling (e.g., using the Cmd-n for the correct spelling), the erroneous part of the misspelled word is erased and replaced with just the lower-case "a"--rather than the letters needed to properly spell the word. And I note that I now get, in conjunction with the appearance of the Suggest Spelling Window, the the small (narrow, but full width), separate, window below my message window (with nothing in it, but, at the left and vertically, are the 3 "stoplight" buttons which, when I mouse over them, are, top to bottom, red (close), uncolored (rather than yellow), and green (re-size). And if I switch to another application and return to Eudora, that narrow window has closed by itself. While I know you had told me long ago what the narrow window meant--and, perhaps, what was done to avoid its appearance--I'm drawing a complete blank on the matter at this point in time.

Narrow window explained here and here.
The problem you're seeing is not explained there - my bet is it's some sort of Snow Leopard/Eudora thing. Sounds keyboard-related, problem translating characters to their virtual (hardware) keycode in order to post key events while in Eudora. Not sure why this would be Eudora-only - what Keyboard layout do you normally use? Easy to tell by seeing what's selected in the Set Keyboard submenu in Spell Catcher's Input menu.
Anything being spewed to the system.log in the Console?

I experienced the same 'a' result in Eudora 6.2.4 today after upgrading to SCX 3.3, and tried the same fix of dragging the Spell Catcher component to desktop and restarting, to no avail. (I'm still on regular Leopard, not Snow, but what I found may prove relevant)
Then looked up the thread from last year when the same problem occurred in an earlier upgrade:
http://www.rainmakerinc.com/forums/index.p...6&hl=eudora
What ended up working for me then and this time was a combination of dragging/restarting, opening Eudora then QUITTING Eudora and relaunching it. Before I did that I too began messing with the Interactive/Typing settings. What works for me is having none of the Enhanced features boxes checked.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your continued hard work, Evan!

Just upgraded to Spell Catcher X v10.3.3 and, although nothing in the revision information suggested to me that it would have an impact on my problem, I’m happy to report that my shorthands are, once again, expanding properly.

Eudora, when I updated to Spell Catcher 10.3.6 (installed on OSX 10.5.8 iMac) last night, exhibited the same symptoms as with previous updates, and responded to the same fixes:
the combination of pulling the SCX component out of User/Library folder and putting it back, restarting computer, then launching Eudora, quitting it, and relaunching it seems to have put everything straight. That last step was essential.
FWIW, here are my Spell Catcher Interactive settings for Eudora. Anything not mentioned is not checked.
Typing:
Interactive features enabled
Enhanced features: none checked
Automatic:
this is a matter of preference, but I have only "Fix Doubled Capitals" checked
Shorthands:
Make Shorthand Glossary expansions as you type
Expand abbreviations defined as word pairs.
