I have searched high and low and read the FAQs, but I cannot find instructions on turning on audible alerts. I want Spell Catcher to speak to me when an error is made. I am using 10.3.2 on a Dual Processor mac running OS 10.6.2.

How do I turn it on?

In the Spell Catcher application, choose Help > Spell Catcher Help. Look at the Alerts section in the Preferences chapter.

For those error types you want to use speech, you'll probably want to deselect the "Play" checkbox in the Sound tab, and select "Speak" in the Speech tab.

Tinker around until you get the results you want. Don’t forget to open your Speech System Preferences and setup your default Text to Speech preferences. I like Alex, rate set to about 65%.

P.S. Speech alerts have been significantly improved for the upcoming 10.3.3 update - you can include the error itself in the spoken alert, along with other basic text-to-speech commands (pause, emphasize, speak by letter, etc.).

I followed your instructions very carefully. I still have no sound.

No sound whatsoever, not for sounds or speech?

Open System Preferences, Sound, check your settings in the Output tab.

The output is set correctly -- headphones -- to which I have an amplifier/speaker system attached. I hear other sounds such as the audio track on video clips. This problem is true on two computers, both running the OS and Spell Catcher version I listed above.

Charlie

On which device do you hear System Alert sounds? That is the output device that Spell Catcher uses for output.

Perhaps better yet, upload a screenshot of your sound output settings.

Charlie,

Does your SCX alerts pref window look like this with "play" checked on for each alert you want sound on? See my attached JPG.

Hi I have to join in here. I am having the same problem with the Alerts. I have set them to sounds that I created myself and that have worked fine with past versions of SCX. With this version, I set the Alerts and they work for a couple of minutes but then revert to a very quiet female voice that I can barely hear (default). Is there some way to make the sounds that I set stick in the Preferences?

I haven't given up, but also haven't been able to reproduce this. I'll keep at it.

Well, I don't know what's wrong at this point, not being able to reproduce it.

Are you selecting one of the "standard" sounds that's in the list? Or creating your own sounds to use? If the latter, where do you store them on disk?

Hi Evan, the sounds that I have made for Spell Catcher have been place in the folder:

/Users/Me/Library/Sounds

Almost all my other system sounds seem to be in there as well. Would there be a better place to put them?
I thought of opening up the Spell Catcher Contents in Finder and placing my sounds into the Spell Catcher Sounds folder, but I didn't know what might happen if I did.

Hi again Evan this just in...

I have been using my computer quite a bit this morning and I found that the Alert Preferences have stuck after all. I guess somehow Spell Catcher decided to settle down overnight :)

All is well again!

And by the way, I really appreciate what you have done to SCX. The upgrade to 64bit has really made a difference now that I have changed all the applications that were written in 64bit back to the way they are supposed to run. But I have also noticed a general increase in speed and accuracy. Well done!

John G.

One very basic question that I don't think I've asked:

If you unplug what's plugged into the headphones jack, do you hear anything?

Thank you Evan. Success!

I unplugged the miniature phone plug that was plugged into the headphone jack, and which was connected to an amplifier and speaker. i was able to hear the SpellCatcher sounds. With the phone plug connected I am able to hear the audio from movie clips, music from iTunes, and so on. Why can’t I hear SpellCatcher sounds through the amplifier/speaker?

Interesting. I don't know why you can't heard Spell Catcher’s audible alerts…

Do you hear regular system alert sounds though this amplifier? You know, the ones in the Sound Effects tab? What's selected in the "Play sound effects through:" popup (my guess is you have no choice)?

Can you upload a screenshot of the Sound Effects tab of your Sound System Preferences?

What's the exact hardware device you're using? I wonder if it's not being properly detected somehow. I just plugged in an external amp/speaker and could hear Spell Catcher alerts no problem.
