The Suggest Spelling Window is pretty problematic in the input method application. This is noted well in the Help Book (read "Detailed Differences").
I started working on a possible solution, but it didn't pan out. For now, stick to the Pop-Up Suggestions List and Check Word if you need to type something into the "Use:" field for whatever reason.
The Suggest Spelling Window has always been a very nasty thing to implement. I'd so love to do away with it entirely.
This has been true since Spell Catcher 8 - the grief goes way, way back.
