Hello all. I've had Opera installed for about a month it's gradually becoming my default browser. There are two annoyances that have persisted despite upgrading to SCX 10.3.6 and some cursory attempts at troubleshooting.

They are:

1) the "Look Up" menu item: the interface opens accordingly when invoked but does not properly reference selected text as in other apps -- the Look Up input text field remains empty or populated with the last term the user manually entered or successfully referenced. Oddly, when entering text via html forms and Opera, the SCX's feature functions properly. It only seems to be static text coded into an (Opera) html page that SCX has difficulty with.

2) The "Check Selection" feature is permanently disabled for Opera (regardless of whether or not text is selected). The feature is currently assigned the default SCX key combo, Command-Control-C, and I've not been able to find a conflict with Opera's key commands.

The Vitals:
OS: 10.6.3
Opera: Version 10.53
SCX: 10.3.6

Any clues folks?

OK, just managed to install a build of Opera 10 that doesn't crash immediately when it's launched (I had no luck with Opera 10.53, there are download links on their blog for builds that fix the problem).

It's easily one of the worst apps I've ever encountered with respect to its Mac OS X text input implementation. So far, I haven't found anything that it does right.

Interestingly, on my quest to find a version of Opera 10 that actually ran, I did some testing with Opera 9. It worked much better with Spell Catcher (and therefore other input methods). Still problematic, but not the disaster that Opera 10 is.

I could compile a list of all the things Opera 10 is doing wrong, but I don't think it's possible for me to work around any of them on my end. It's just too broken.

My advice: use a web browser that's truly built for use on Mac OS X.

Thank you Evan for your efforts. I can certainly make do without Opera until it proves itself ready for prime time. Posted via Firefox...

While Firefox is better than Opera, keep in mind that it's a cross-platform browser as well, and has issues of its own on Mac OS X…
