In Mail Application when using the "Check Selection" window it appears as all black except for the specific word which is being checked. If you proceed to correct the words as usual each bad word is highlighted and when you finish and paste, it pastes a completely black image back into your mail. I have checked the font preferences for Spell Checker but can't find a background color which would cause this. I assume it must be in the Spell Catcher font/background selection but can't find the wrong setting. I have reset to the default fonts and also reloaded the Spell Cacher application. Everything had been working fine for a long time and suddenly in the middle of creating e-mails it just started doing this. I am using an Intel MAC with 10.6.4 and Spell Catcher version 10.3.6.

Are your emails being composed with a background color or image? Can you post a screenshot of the email being composed?

Sure, think I have it in these two files. The first shows the e-mail in the background in Mail andin the foreground is the Spell Catcher Check Selection Window that is showing black. Also it shows as RTFD at the top of that window and I am not sure that is what it used to say. Anyway, the second is the e-mail in Mail again with the Mail Font window and the Mail color window showing in the foreground.

I think the easiest way for me to get to the bottom of this is for you to compose a simple email that demonstrates this, and fire it off to our feedback address. Just choose Help > Send Feedback via E-Mail from within the Spell Catcher application.

OK, I can reproduce this - the key was that your email mentioned using the Check Selection command from the Services menu.

You say you've always initiated Check Selection this way, via the Services menu, and this only recently started happening?

Anyway, it looks to be a bug in Mail, or perhaps in WebKit (which Mail uses for message composition) - easy to reproduce by using the "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection" service. I haven't figured out a way around it - at least using the commands in the Services menu.

The problem doesn't happen if you use the Check Selection command that's in Spell Catcher’s Input menu, or in the Spell Catcher application's Dock menu. So that's what you're going to have to start using…

I need more details about the problem in order to file a bug report with Apple, which I'll try to find time to do over the next few days.

I have tried what you suggested and it works fine. Since it is a keyboard function I probably should have been doing this anyway. i generally use keyboard functions over menu selections for things that I do a lot. Spell Catcher spell checking is one of those and I even use it in Web windows when I type in the comments selections of the web page. I prefer my spell checking to be the same from application to application.

Yes, I have always selected "Check Selection" from the services menu (Mail, etc.) for years. I neglected to specify the way I did this was from the "Services" menu until a later post. Guess I got started this way and just kept doing it. I have been updating "Snow Leopard" and maybe the last update which I think was pretty recent changed something. I also remember a fairly recent update to Mail and maybe it started after that. I did not make the connection but likely could now. Thanks for your help and your time. I appreciate it and realize that you have many other things you need to work on. Thanks, jim

Well, by default Spell Catcher defines command-shift-e as the keyboard shortcut for Services > Check Selection. However, if the same shortcut is in use by the application you're in, the Mac OS will give it precedence and remove the one used in the Services menu. On Snow Leopard, it's possible to assign your own keyboard shortcut for Services.

Anyway, I have confirmed that this is a bug in the version of the WebKit.framework that gets installed along with Safari 5.0 and/or Mac OS X 10.6.4. Bug filed with Apple. Basically, there's no problem on 10.5.8 before installing Safari 5.0. But install Safari 5.0 from Software Update, and the black background appears.

(I needed to do a fresh install of Leopard on one of my Macs, so had the opportunity to test this at the same time)

What's happening is that the RTF produced by Mail/WebKit and placed on the Services pasteboard (with Safari 5.0) contains a \cb0 (background color) RTF control word. Previously, it did not. I couldn't find any reasonable work around for this. At least you can access Spell Catcher’s Check Selection command other ways - may not be possible for all Services that request RTF, though (Make New Sticky Note for example).
