Hi;

I just purchased Spell Catcher X and the Russian language pack last night. I have been working since then on getting it to work with Microsoft Word 2008 on my Mac with Snow Leopard. I already have all the latest versions of all software installed. :rolleyes:

Here's my problem: I have keyboards installed in the OS for US English, Russian and Russian Phonetic. I only have US English and Russian languages installed in my OS X. If I choose any of the 3 input methods (Spell Catcher, Spell Catcher Unicode or Spell Catcher Cyrillic) I can't type in Russian. I only get US English characters. If I pick one of the Russian keyboards cyrillic works fine, but Spell Catcher does nothing.

I am sure I have made a stupid mistake somewhere, but I sure can't find it. In one of your tutorials, you discussed how to use and set up TextEdit. That worked perfectly, if that helps.

Thanks for your assistance,
Marc

For Cyrillic users, it's best to select the Spell Catcher preferences (Language pane) to "Remember language with input mode" and "Remember keyboard with input mode". Do that first.

Then, when you want to spell check in Russian, choose Spell Catcher Cyrillic from the Input menu, then ONCE, select Russian from the Set Language menu (even if it already is - this gets it "remembered"), and then select the Russian keyboard you want to use in the Set Keyboard submenu (same - just once).

Do something similar for the other Spell Catcher input modes to associate your English language and keyboard with those modes.

Now when you switch input modes, the language and keyboard will automatically change appropriately.

Hi Evan;

Thanks for the quick reply. But, try as I might, I can't seem to get your instructions to work.

Here's what I did:
  • Went to Spell Catcher preferences (Language pane) and checked both "Remember language with input mode" and "Remember keyboard with input mode"
  • Went to Spell Catcher preferences (Language pane) and clicked on Russian as the default spelling language
  • Then switched my keyboard to Russian Phonetic
  • Went back to Spell Catcher preferences (Language pane) and clicked on English as the default spelling language
  • Then switched my keyboard to U.S.
  • Now I open Word 2008
  • I switch my keyboard to Spell Catcher
  • Types in English fine, and spell checks perfectly
  • I switch my keyboard to Spell Catcher Cyrillic
  • Still only types in English
Any idea which step I messed up?

Please help... my spelling is awful Posted Image Well, in Russian anyway.

Thanks,
Marc

You don't want to mess with the default spelling language in Spell Catcher’s Language Preferences. Best to leave it as "Use System Preferences". Make sure you change it back with Universal selected in the list of applications in the Applications drawer, and if MS Word is in the list, select it as well and ensure it's set the same.

What you want to do is this:
  • Select Spell Catcher Cyrillic in the Input menu (yellow checkmark).
  • Pull down the Input menu (yellow checkmark), then in the Set Language submenu, select Russian (even if it's already selected).
  • Pull down the Input menu (yellow checkmark), then in the Set Keyboard submenu, select the Russian keyboard you like to use (even if it's already selected).
  • Select Spell Catcher in the Input menu.
  • Pull down the Input menu (yellow checkmark), then in the Set Language submenu, select U.S. English (even if it's already selected).
  • Pull down the Input menu (yellow checkmark), then in the Set Keyboard submenu, select the U.S. (or whichever Roman script) keyboard you like to use (even if it's already selected).
Now when you switch to Spell Catcher Cyrillic, the language will automatically change to Russian, as well as the keyboard. Switch to Spell Catcher, and the language will be set to U.S. English, likewise the keyboard will change.

NOTE: You only have to do the above Set Language/Set Keyboard steps once.

Thanks Evan;

We're making headway. Now my keyboard is switching, and spell checking is working when I select Spell Checker in English, but when I select Spell Checker Cyrillic, it types in Russian now, but no spell checking.

Any idea?

When you're using Spell Catcher Cyrillic, pull down the Input menu and make sure that Russian is selected in the Set Language submenu.

REMEMBER that Spell Catcher is not a MS Office plug-in. You won't see any red underlines in Word from Spell Catcher. Spell Catcher has its own user interface, the same regardless of the app you're using. If you weren't aware of this, and expecting red underlines in Word, watch our video tutorials and follow the Crash Course Tutorial in the Help Book (Spell Catcher app, Help > Spell Catcher Help).
