Suddenly, I am seeing odd behavior on both my Mac at home and in the office. This just started, simultaneously, on both machines. I have a theory, which I'll explain in a moment...

Main symptoms:

- At work: When I type a word for which a Glossary item exists, all I see is the first letter, or no letter, of the replacement. For example, if the shortcut "btw" yields "by the way," typing "btw" gives me "b" or sometimes, it gives me nothing at all.

- At home: When I type a word for which a Glossary item exists, the first letter is repeated. For example, if the shortcut "btw" yields "by the way," typing "btw" gives me "bby the way".

Clue: What do these machines have in common that changed yesyerday, when these behaviors began? Nothing. HOWEVER, there is one thing both machines have in common. A few weeks ago, I placed all my SC References into a Dropbox shared folder so that both home and work use the same files. It worked perfectly for weeks.

BOTH machines running SC 10.3.6 on latest Mac OS X 10.6.4. Restarting has no benefit. The flaw appears in multiple apps.

Any ideas?

TIA...

One more bit of data: On the work machine. the problem is seen when I use Chrome but not when I use ee-mail (Eudora) or Firefox.

I don't think you can use DropBox this way.

See this thread.

Might be the problem???

Yes, that's it. I moved the files back where they belong and all is happy except that I am still having issues in Chrome. I have some debugging to do. Will let you know what I learn.

A few mysteries remain. Like, why did it work just fine for many weeks? I tested it pretty carefully, too. The other thread suggests that issues occur when Dropbox sees conflicting changes and generates two files to be reconciled. But I didn't have any extra files.

Odd.

Anyway: A smoother way to sync these files would be wonderful. I'll chime in on the other thread.

Thanks. Great support as usual, Evan.

OK, an update. Moving my references back where they belong fixed things on both machines. Except for one thing: Google Chrome where it consistently fails. If I type "btw," instead of "by the way," I get "b" or "bbtw" or "bby the way". Other apps seem fine, including Firefox, Word, Eudora.

Bad bug (not work around-able) in recent versions of Chrome. Older versions were fine. Don't think there's anything I can do to get around it. They have to fix their software (very poor text input implementation).

OK, thanks. But it was working fine until this week! Odd. Wish I knew what changed.

Well, Google's motto is "release early and often" so maybe this will pass...

What changed? They introduced a bug related to text input.

If you like their product and use it, see if you can report it. Sorry I can't pin it down to anything more specific at this time.
