Back in August, I posted a query under the title, "MS Word Headings & Expansions." I described the problem I had after using a function key in MS Word: I finish a paragraph, hit return, and use a function key to start a new style (e.g., Heading 2). I then enter a shortcut. Spell Catcher then deletes the paragraph return and pastes in a special character and the expanded reference, both in "MS Reference San Serif" font.
Mr. Gross offered some diagnostic questions, which helped me realize this is in fact a function key problem, not a heading problem or even a Word problem. The problem does not appear when I select a style from the drop down menu or a toolbar. It does appear when I do an expansion immediately after using a function key. It also appears in other applications, e.g. Text Wrangler. But I was slow in replying, and the thread seems to have died.
The problem appeared after I switched from a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.5.8 to a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.3.
In the Keyboard Pane of System Preferences, I did not check the box for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." In other words, to use them in an application, I hold down the fn button. If I hit a function key without the button (e.g., to brighten the screen with F2) I do not have the problem.
Does anyone else have this problem?
