I don’t know how this happened but when I select check all, all the words being checked are selected for review. Any advice? Thanks - Neil

Check that the language you're checking is is correct. Open Spell Catcher Preferences, References pane, click the disclosure triangle to the left of your language, make sure the Main Spellings files are "Used".
