Sorry for being late to the party, I have had major computer problems for the last three months and thanks to Apple and looking through the Rainmaker forums and pages found the problem.

I have been running Spell Catcher 10.3.2 and since there was the activation program, had no problems with anything. But when Safari went to version 5, I never knew that my version of Spell Catcher was going to cause be grieve.

I must run 20 or 30 different applications on my Mac, and unless the company notifies me about an upgrade or a problem, or if system upgrade comes up with something, we continue business as usual.

Since I don't come to this rainmaker site like others, I was completely unaware of the problems with Safari 5 and Spell Catcher 10.3.2. Now Spell Catcher never comes up on software update so I suffered numerous Safari freezeups and crashes and for months i endured all of this. It was only in the last three weeks, have no idea why, but the crashes got worst and every 10 pages on Safari got the spinning beachball. That is when Apple looked through the crash reports and found the problem, Spell Catcher 10.3.2

Of course Evan I know that you will say that I should of checked this out, but honestly in using so many different apps, utilities and programs I don't have time to spend 15 minutes a week checking each one. That is because most of these companies have either a way to email customers about problems or get the new software on the Mac's Software Update.

Evan I know that your program is only $30 dollars, but is there a way to contact people when new updates or major problems like this comes up??? This was really awful for me and cost me a lot of time. I am savvy but not to the point of checking crash reports and seeing problems like this.

Thanks
Sal Johnson

We have a mailing list (for those that have signed up for it - there is a form on our home page where you can), and I did debate sending out a mass mailing for this, but didn't for a couple of reasons:

  • Spell Catcher has an automatic update feature, and the update would appear there.
  • Apple fixed the problem at the same time I did. The fix got rolled into Safari 5.0.2, so if you stayed up to date with Apple updates, the problem would go away.

So folks were covered either way.

BUT the problem you describe sounds nothing like the one that was addressed with these updates. That problem was a repeatable crash whenever you used the Look Up feature of Spell Catcher.

The beachballs are something entirely different - an Apple bug that has been reported but not yet fixed. The solution is to deselect Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing in Safari.

It sounds like you have Spell Catcher’s update checking turned off. Take a look by choosing Spell Catcher > Get Updates and Languages (in the Spell Catcher application).

On my Spell Catcher the update feature is checked and I still never got an update.

Now on the crash, since updating to 10.3.6 have no problems with Safari but now getting the magic beach ball crashes on Outlook from Office 2011. Seems that everytime it makes a suggestion of a spelling problem, I get the spinning beach ball which I then have to force quit.

As for the tip you gave to deslect editI will try and see if that helps. But the problem with outlook on the new office 2011 is a problem

Again I know it's very hard to keep up with all of this and stay competitive, the business environment is tough these days.

thanks

Too late now, I suppose, but I wonder if checking manually would have given a different result. Strange.

Two things, first I told you bogus information. Yes when the software updated I now remember that I got a upgrade.
I didn't do the update because I had just upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3 and it was a time consuming painful upgrade that took hours to do and I was afraid the upgrade from 10.3.2 to the next level was going to be time consuming so I put it on the back burner. Forgot about that until I thought hard about it, by apologize, the upgrade from 10.3.2 to 10.3.6 was a easy process.

On the Outlook problem have done what you recommend and when I do Outlook now I get the old Spell Catcher menu on top-right without the 64 over checkmark. I now get it, Office 2011 has been written in 32 bit so I can see the problem. Question to you since I haven't used it much because I use BBEdit, do I have to do the same for Word 2011?? That is also written in 32 bit. Now for the last couple of weeks have not gotten the beach ball in Office, but haven't run it as hard as Outlook.

Thanks

I have had one report that Word 2011 works better with the input method component, but haven't been able to verify that. If you're having problems with Word, try it and let me know.
