Opening large pdf files with Preview and Skim (which uses also uses PDFkit) can be very slow. It appears that SC tries to extract all text in the main view, and in continuous scrolling mode (as opposed to 1-page or 2-pages mode) this can be quite a lot for large files. Turning off SC input mode solves the problem. Turning it on causes the slowdown to reappear.

Nope, Spell Catcher does nothing of the sort if you're not using DirectCorrect or Check Selection.

I submit that something else is going on - open Activity Monitor and see what's taking up all the CPU time.
