In Word 2011 [and in previous versions of Word], the shortcut to change format to small caps is Cmd-Shft-K. In SC 10, the default command for check word is Cmd-Ctrl-K.

When in Word, if I hit Cmd-Shft-K, I don't get the word or phrase changed to small caps. Instead, I get SC with Check Word. See the attached screen shot.

How to fix???

Change the shortcut for either Word or Spell Catcher. Let me know which of those help.

I've tried that. It hasn't worked. However, being adventerous, I tried again. Without closing any applications or leaving my account, while in Safari, I opened SC preferences, went to Shortcuts, which opened in Shortcuts (Safari), clicked on Universal, highlighted "Check Word", clicked on Set, and changed the SC shortcut to alt-cmd-K. I then closed preferences, and returned to Word.

I highlighted a three line address and clicked Shft-Cmd-K. I got SC preferences opened to the same screen that I sent to you originally ["Spell Catcher Word Check //New line// Please select between one and two words (separated by spaces) to check"]. Leaving the same highlighted phrase in Word, I clicked alt-cmd-K and got the same screen that I sent you previously.

By the way, you can't select between one and two word, b/c there's nothing between one and two. you can you can only select one OR two words.; however, I'll try the same thing and do a restart between and see what happens.

So after all this, I shut down the Mac and then started it up. I tried the same highlighted text in Word with the same result.

Now what?

OK, the keyboard shortcut conflict here is between Word's small caps command and Spell Catcher's Check Word command in the Services menu. What you've been trying is changing the shortcut (in Spell Catcher) for the Check Word command in Spell Catcher's Input menu.

To change the shortcut for Check Word in the Services menu, open System Preferences, select the Keyboard pane, Keyboard Shortcuts tab, select the Services item in the list on the left, scroll to find Check Word in the Text section, and change that shortcut.

What's happening is that the Mac OS is "winning", because it's only finding one match for command-shift-k in a menu in the menu bar (Services). Normally, if the same shortcut also appears in an application's menu command, the Mac OS will let the application "win", and remove the shortcut for any matching Services command. However, because Word has no menu item for small caps in its menu bar (it handles that and other keyboard shortcuts some other way), Word "loses".

Apple's User Interface Guidelines frown upon this, stating that there should be no hidden shortcuts - there should always be a menu item as well.

So my guess is that you will find other Word shortcuts of this nature - any Mac OS-handled command with that shortcut will be preferred over Word's. So you'll end up either changing Word's shortcut, or changing it in System Preferences. Once again, MS blows it as far as being a good Mac OS X "citizen".

Yup, you found the problem. Interesting. I've used Macs for 25 years and never looked at the Services menu. Now I see that I can have quick access into various SC tasks. Cool!

I unchecked "Check Word" in the Services preferences and that did the trick. Thanks.

Now I'll post about the other major problem I have. It has me ready to switch to Typinator!
