Greetings,

First, thanks for a great product. I'm a heavy SC user for many years - I couldn't live without it.

I'm running SpellCatcher 10.3.7 on Mac OS 10.4.11.

I'm pretty sure this problem just began after I updated SC to version 10.3.7.

In Microsoft Entourage 2004, after I type a SC shorthand (in either the Subject Line or the Body), then just after I hit the space bar or the return key (before the shorthand can expand), Entourage crashes.

It doesn't happen every time, but it happens quite frequently. It's a royal PITA, as I work in Entourage constantly, and depend on SC shorthands in almost every email.

Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Brian

Can you email a crash report to our feedback address (Spell Catcher application, Help > Send Feedback by E-Mail)?

Spell Catcher X 10.3.7 is only minimally different from 10.3.6, input method component included.

Anyway, a crash report will at least tell me something. When you say "frequently", can you quantify? Once a day? Once an hour? Once a minute? Can you determine any sort of pattern or steps to reproduce? Does the actual shorthand matter at all?

I don't recall getting other reports of this…

Evan,

After I sent the ticket, I restarted (hadn't in a while) and since then, I've run lots of shorthands in Entourage with no crashes.

So I'll report back if the problem returns.

How do I get the crash report? (I looked in Library/Logs/Crash Reporter, but didn't find anything helpful.)

Thanks again for a great product.

Brian

Look in your HOME folder - same folder should be there. Look for reports for Entourage (and if you find any for Spell Catcher, send them too). Make sure to send a compressed archive (.zip) if there are many files.

I don't know what (or where) you mean by "HOME" folder? And also, "same folder should be there"?

In the Finder, choose Go > Home. Navigate to the Library/Logs/Crash Reporter folder in your home folder, Look in there for relevant crash reports.

Got it - thanks Evan.

There is a "Spell Catcher.crash.log" file, but the date it was last modified is April, 2008. And there is not a crash log for Entourage.

Right - MS catches their crashes themselves, and no (standard) crash log is written.

Hmmm, not sure what to do about that. Do you see the Microsoft Crash dialog appear?

A shorthand hasn't crashed Entourage since the last restart - so let's forget about it for now.

Thanks for the support.

Updating... The problem in my OP continued, although widely intermittently. But after a log out or a restart SC's shorthands would stop boming Entourage. A big SC shorthand would also occasionally bomb Safari (v.3).

This week I upgraded the OS to 10.5.8, and so far SC shorthands have not crashed either Entourage or Safari (now v.5).
