Ever since I upgraded Outlook 2011 to SP1 (14.1.0) whenever I attempt to use a shortcut to insert text Outlook hangs and I have to force quit the application. I'm running Mac/OS 10.6.7 and Spell Catcher 10.3.7.

Outlook didn't have this problem prior to the Service Pack being applied.

This is nothing new with SP1, anyway, solution in this FAQ.

I have done as the FAQ suggests and this works most of the time. However, on occasion, when I start a new email it will revert to the input method and crash. I cannot figure out why it happens sometimes but this is the case at least once per day and sometimes more often.

Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks,

Mark

Shouldn’t - however I don't know exactly what you mean when you say "revert to the input method:. You mean the input method application (64-bit) instead of the input method component?

Can you reproduce this? Or at least clarify?

Yes, several times a day Outlook freezes and when I look up to the menu bar I see it is set to “input method application (64-bit)“. If I force quit and restart Outlook then it is back to the input method component. I cannot figure out what the pattern is but it happens often.

If you can ever figure out a reproducible sequence to illustrate this, please let me know! Include version of Mac OS X, version of Spell Catcher X.

Meanwhile, I think if you deselect Check Spelling While Typing (Edit > Spelling and Grammar or possibly somewhere in Outlook's preferences) you should at least be able to eliminate the hangs. Still, I need to know what's going on so I can fix it.

How do you normally switch between (or to) Outlook? Command-tab? Click its icon in the Dock? Expose? Other keyboard shortcut?

I will pay closer attention and see if I can figure it out.

I already have check spelling while you type deselected.

I almost always get to Outlook using command tab.

OS X 10.6.8, SC 10.4

I have left Console open while working in Outlook and have notice something. Most of the time when I get a spinning beachball in Outlook I get a message in Console:

11-11-17 9:21:35 AM Console[24196] Error loading /Users/mchapman/Library/Components/Spell Catcher.component/Contents/MacOS/Spell Catcher: dlopen(/Users/mchapman/Library/Components/Spell Catcher.component/Contents/MacOS/Spell Catcher, 262): no suitable image found. Did find: /Users/mchapman/Library/Components/Spell Catcher.component/Contents/MacOS/Spell Catcher: no matching architecture in universal wrapper

What I don’t know is whether this message is causing the problem or results from the problem.

That message is harmless. I tried for a couple of hours yesterday to reproduce this with no luck. There's some specific sequence of events or Outlook Preferences that are at the heart of it. Sure wish I could see it for myself...

It seems to show up fairly regularly. Anything I should check to see what might be causing it.

That said, it appears to be a tangent from my main concern.

Thanks,

Mark

I know exactly why that message is logged (I'm sure you can figure it out if you read it carefully). I have no idea why Apple has chosen to log this non-serious non-error, but, well, they do.

It gets logged when a plug-in of some sort (input method components are plug-ins) tries to get loaded by the Mac OS, but the plug-in does not contain code that matches the architecture of the process that wants to load it.

So in this case, since the Console is running in 64-bit mode, but Spell Catcher’s input method component contains only 32-bit code, that message gets logged. So basically, you switch from Outlook 2011 when Spell Catcher’s input method component is active to another app that's running in 64-bit mode, you get that message. And in this case, it's harmless. And certainly not the cause...

That is logical and interesting but as you note not relevant to the problem.

Thanks.

I have been watching closely and have more detail about what happens.

Spellcatcher looks fine (e.g., there is no 64 on the icon), Outlook freezes, and then the 64 shows up.

There are no messages in the console about Outlook and only the red herring message above about Spellcatcher.

Not sure what to make of this,

Mark

What else is on the screen? An Outlook crash message?

I'm as "not sure" as you are...

No message. Usually I just get the spinning beach ball until I force quit Outlook. Rarely, after several minutes it comes back.
