Evan,
Kudos on releasing SCX 10.4! I remain the program's biggest fan and the world's worst speller. I have not yet delved into the new features, but I hope to today. One thing I am curious about; the default woman's voice set for alerts sounds like she's in a barrel. Is that the way it is, or do I have something set wrong?

So how do I change the voice? I'm selecting another voice in ALters/Speech, but they don't stick.

No. I'm the program's biggest fan and the world's worst speller.

Just kidding. But I do love Spell Catcher.

Not sure if I should piggyback on this thread or start another, but in the interests of economy and clutter-reduction, here I am.

I'm really liking 10.4 thus far. Editing shorthands is much easier now. The interface is cleaner, but more importantly, the behavior is great. Getting the various parts of the shorthand box selected/highlighted used to require multiple clicks usually, but now just one double-click does the job.

I love the capability to use styled text in shorthands (though I wish all applications were able to implement expansions of it!), and the documentation has taken a great leap forward.

Thanks so much, Evan, for continuing to improve a product that started out great. SCX truly is the one aftermarket software product I couldn't get along without. And I don't even use it for checking spelling!

I had my sister record new spoken alert sounds, as I've had a number of complaints about the old ones. They old ones were recorded back in the Mac II days, not sure how (what hardware/software), but they were mono and not the best quality.

My sister also did the voice over for our Video Tutorials, and she definitely wasn't "in a barrel." She had a MacBook Pro (relatively new one), not sure what software. Probably used the internal mic, though. But they're in stereo, quality is for sure better than the old sounds.

Anyway, at least she's available, and can re-record them if need be. I can send her here to get feedback, if you have specific ideas about them, she can join the conversation.

I do wonder if I have something wrong with my SCX setup or my system. I cannot change the voice. Can you make a suggestion?

I messed with the sound settings and now I have two voices at the same time, and I can't seem to change that.

Did you copy in the old alerts to your Library/Sounds folder? Maybe you need to rename the files if they have the same name. If you're using speech, make sure Play is deselected for sound alerts.

I can't find the SCX sounds on my system. I do find sounds in my System folder/Sounds, and system voices in my System folder/Speech/Voices, and SCX says your sister's voice is in Applications/Spell Catcher. I've changed the SCX settings like you suggested, but I still get your sister's voice. I made a screen shot movie and put it in my DropBox. You can get it here:

You both the Play checkbox (in the Sound tab) selected, and the Speak checkbox selected (Speech tab) selected. So sure, you'll hear both of them. I'm guessing you want to deselect "Play" in the Sound tab. Correct?

I think I found the problem. I was assuming I had all the setting the same for all the applications in the Applications List. Not so... Things are on track now. Thanks for the help.
