I am running the Lion with the latest versions of both SC. When I am typing both in Mail and especially Safari on a Message Board the spell checker goes nuts. It will try to correct a word going back to the word before and won't accept my over ride by retyping. It will delete it a second and third time frequently substituting what it thinks I am typing. Once I figured out that I had to go back several letters and delete, but that is only one time. I feel as if I am fighting for control of my keyboard.

I must have some settings wrong, but I did turn off Direct Correct, but that had no effect on this at all. It does not happen all the time, but once it starts, I can't figure out how to fix it.

Can you give me a concrete example of a word where this happens? Does it happen on this message board?

If you open Language & Text System Preferences, view the Text pane, are either of "Use symbol and text substitution" or "Correct spelling automatically" selected?
In Mail/Safari, is Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing selected?

If any of the above are selected, do things work as expected if you deselect them?

The key phrase, although there are others are the Tea Party, it is a political message board. I checked and all the items you mentioned were checked. I have unchecked the ones in in the System Preferences, and will see what happens. If those work, find, and if not, I have others to try.

Thanks, will let you know whether this takes care of the problem.

I am not the OP, but I, too, feel like I am fighting for control in Safari 5.1 on Lion at some points. It is mostly tied to Pinboard.in. When I try to enter keywords for a new bookmark entry, I get a mix of Pinboard's suggestion plus what appears to be a spelling correction. This usually seems to result in duplication of the first few characters of the keyword I was typing.

I currently have "Use symbol and text substitution" and "Correct spelling automatically" enabled. I can try turning them off now and will see what happens during my next bookmarking effort.

Turning off the two Language & Text options did not help when I tried to add keywords to a new bookmark on Pinboard.in in Safari. I just turned off Safari's "Correct spelling" option to see if that will help.

Before and after that last change, I am now getting words (such as misspelled words) highlighted in red and green in my text fields. I am also only seeing SCX's autocorrection pop-ups, and not Lion's new spelling/autocorrect pop-ups. Interestingly, the red/green highlighting in text fields doesn't scroll when I moved down a web page in Safari (with my trackpad and gesture scrolling). Instead, the rest of the page moves but the highlighted words remain at the same X,Y screen coordinates, until my scrolling action is complete. Then, they move to where they would be if they are still visible.

Upload a screenshot. You may well be seeing the Mac OS X spell checker in action.
