Either MobileMe syncing is not working, or, I don’t understand what it is supposed to do. Let me explain.

I use SpellCatcher on three different machines. It is my desire that any shorthand or other change/addition I make to one reference file is automatically transferred to the other two via MobileMe syncing. I think this is how it’s supposed to work?

Well, it’s not, and here’s an example: I use a particular shorthand for a credit card number, so I don’t have to remember it or keep typing it. I recently changed the expansion from one credit card number to another, and the new one only exists on the original machine on which the change was made. The other machines still expand to the old number.

I am 100% certain that I have the MobileMe syncing set up properly, that all permissions are correct, that all applications are up to date, etc.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Yes, you're correct about how syncing is supposed to work. A couple of questions for you:

In System Preferences, MobileMe pane, Sync tab - do you have "Automatically" selected in the popup on all 3 machines?

When you first turned on (selected) Spell Catcher in the list of "what to sync", did something happen? On each Mac, you should have been prompted about what to do for this first sync. Were you? What option did you choose (merge, replace on this computer…)?

After the first sync, were the list of references (Spell Catcher Preferences, References pane, relevant language(s) expanded) the same?

In Spell Catcher Preferences, References pane, are the references you want synced selected in the "Sync" column?

Generally, syncs happen (automatically) ever hour or so.

Do you have access to all 3 machines so you can do a bit of experimenting to actually watch what's happening? Tip: hold down the option key and click to pull down the Sync menu in the (right hand side) menu bar. Doing this will show the last time a particular app was synced. See if this time looks about right for Spell Catcher on each Mac.

Thanks, Evan. Here are the answers to your questions IN CAPS:

In System Preferences, MobileMe pane, Sync tab - do you have "Automatically" selected in the popup on all 3 machines? YES

When you first turned on (selected) Spell Catcher in the list of "what to sync", did something happen? YES.

On each Mac, you should have been prompted about what to do for this first sync. Were you? YES.

What option did you choose (merge, replace on this computer…)? ON THE FIRST SYNC, I OVERWROTE MOBILEME. ON THE SECOND AND THIRD (DIFFERENT MACHINES), I OVERWROTE THE COMPUTER FROM MOBILEME.

After the first sync, were the list of references (Spell Catcher Preferences, References pane, relevant language(s) expanded) the same? SOME, BUT NOT ALL.

In Spell Catcher Preferences, References pane, are the references you want synced selected in the "Sync" column? YES.

Generally, syncs happen (automatically) ever hour or so.

Do you have access to all 3 machines so you can do a bit of experimenting to actually watch what's happening? YES, BUT NOT AT THIS MOMENT - ONLY TWO NOW.

Tip: hold down the option key and click to pull down the Sync menu in the (right hand side) menu bar. Doing this will show the last time a particular app was synced. See if this time looks about right for Spell Catcher on each Mac. WILL DO THIS ASAP.

THANKS!

P.S. When Mobile Me shuts down, is the sync feature dead? Or, will it work in “the cloud”? Thanks again...

Let me know what you discover. You may also see what happens if you manually change a shorthand, then manually sync MobileMe. See if things work when you do that.

I'll have to write the equivalent code for syncing with iCloud. Luckily, that's many months away. And it looks like the iCloud APIs will be simpler to use than the MobileMe ones.

Long story short, I followed your directions, but no luck. I gave up and copied the SpellCatcher folder from my Application Support on a working machine and replaced the one on the non-working machine, and now it works. Don't know what the problem was...

Thanks.

Wait a minute… Now MobileMe syncing works, or now that one "problem" shorthand works simply because you copied over your Spell Catcher Application Support folder to the other Mac?

If syncing is working now, any chance you have the previous folder hanging around? Maybe there was some sort of permissions problem?
