I seem to be having trouble in Apple Mail, the many shorthands start inserting and then stop, with either Mail moves into not responding mode or just frees up a short while.
Anyone else having this problem?

This is a long-standing, well known problem that's caused by a bug in WebKit related to the way they implement "Check Spelling While Typing".
The best work around is to set Mail's Composing preferences for "When to check spelling" to "Never". For other WebKit apps (like Safari), best to deselect Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing.
