Overall, I'm very pleased with Spell Catcher. But, I'm having a problem with Microsoft Office 2011 Word that I just can't solve. Here goes:

Most of the time (but not always) when I mistype and trigger a shorthand, the app tries to make the correction automatically, but then gets partway through the correction and then starts typing gobbildy goop. Not total garbage - just a mixed up and confused set of letters looking somewhat like the expansion. I've tried making the corrections without backspacing, with backspacing, and all other settings I think might affect this, to no avail.

Similar problem in Mail. An example here is that I have some "macros" where I'll type, say, "rerere" and it's supposed to expand into a sentence. I'll type the rerere and it backspaces and gets about halfway through the expansion and the app freezes (spinning beach ball leading to unresponsive app and a force quit).

Same problem in Safari.

The setup is as follows: brand new MBA 13; Office 2011 14.1.4 ; Lion 10.7.2; Spell Catcher 10.4.1.

Any ideas/help? Am I the only one with this problem?

Thanks!

For Mail and Safari, the problem is a bug in WebKit's spell checking support (Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Check Spelling While Typing). You have to deselect this, or for Mail, set your Composing Preferences for When to check spelling to "Never".

As for Word, this is not something I've heard of. Can you give a concrete example? Can you reproduce it? Have you made sure that Word's own auto-whatever features are disabled?

Evan, thanks. I've "fixed" Mail and Safari.

As for Word, it repeats sporadically. Next time it does, I'll "cut and paste" the change it makes, and post it here with the change is should have made, and the circumstances.

Thanks again...

Evan, I'm not typing much in Word over the holidays, but today I was typing a short note and the problem occurred. Attached is a screenshot of one example. (Actually, I couldn't figure out how to attach a file, so I made the screenshot my bio pic.)

I meant to type "At the same time..." and, evidently, I misspelled the word "the" (which I often do). I have a shorthand set up in Spell Catcher to change "teh" into "the," and I assume (not sure, though) that this shorthand was triggered here, resulting in "At tthes same..." Indeed, after the word "the" (however it was spelled) was typed, the app backspaced on its own, while I contined typing "same," resulting in what you see in the picture.

Hope this makes sense? I'll send more when they occur, probably next week.

Here is another example: I was trying to type the following things: "these rules", "truth, love, and joy", "had all these rules", and "because I", and, evidently, mistyped, triggering some shorthands. The various shorthands (after Spell Catcher recognized my mistakes) were triggered, and automatically backspaced and started "correcting" my mistakes, but ended up with the following: "thsethrules", "truth, llove, and joy", "had all thsethrules," and "bbecauseI". These are all "cut and pastes," by the way, not re-types. Any ideas, Evan? Thanks...

Any chance that Word is "interfering" by performing its own automatic "changes"? Make sure that in Word's preferences (Spelling and Grammar and AutoCorrect panes) that any "as you type" features are deselected (off).

Auto correct was off, but spelling and grammar "as you type" was on. I've deselected it, and will see how things go. Thanks, as usual, Evan...

Still not working properly. Here's one example. I tried to type this: "Simultaneously with signing this contract..." and it expanded to this (cut and paste): "wihtwith gningt siPresenter." All "auto correct" functions in Word are off. Any ideas? Thanks.

Another example: I just tried to type this: "other times we hit the bulleye..." It backtacked and expanded to this (again, but and pasted): "ohterother mes we hit thustiye"

Can you give me a 100% reproducible (and shorter) example?

I really can't, because I don't make the same mistakes twice. Sorry.
