Opening the suggest spelling window to "manually" check a word's spelling seems to be working about 50% of the time no matter which program is in the foreground.

This is a side-effect of the way that input methods must handle any windows they "own" that contain editable text fields. While the Suggest Spelling Window may appear active, Spell Catcher actually (by default) "fakes" it to appear that way. To truly activate the Suggest Spelling Window so that you can enter text into the Use: field, either choose Suggest Spelling from Spell Catcher’s Input menu again, or click the Suggest Spelling Window's title bar.

Evan,
It is the Use: field that is only working about half the time for me.

Are you clicking the Suggest Spelling Window's title bar before trying to type into the Use: field?
