The email I received at time of purchase tells me to make a backup of Spell Checker after installation. When I try to drag any Spell Checker Package icon on to my backup disk, it refuses to go. Also the “Copy...” command in the menu bar won’t copy. I’ve tried various combinations of Permissions and Ownership to no avail. So now I’m vulnerable because I have no backup. How to make the backup?

Don't make a backup of the Spell Catcher package icon - make a backup of the Disk Image file you downloaded (i.e. the .dmg file).

But it does sound very strange that you can't copy the Spell Catcher X.pkg file. I can quite easily. As I said above, it's NOT what you want to do anyway, but tell me what the permissions actually are when you do a Get Info.

Also tell me what kind of disk you are trying to copy to, and what it's permissions are set to when you do a Get Info (and whether the "Ignore ownership.." checkbox is on or off).

I'm also assuming you're trying to copy the file from the mounted disk image - NOT the file of the same name that's found in /Library/Receipts (backing it up would be useless).

Thanks. After reading above, I made a backup of Spell_Catcher_X.dmg. It was on my desktop.

When I first do a Getinfo, owner and group are grayed out and say richardj (Me) and staff (Me), respectively. When I open the lock, they turn black. Before trying to make the .pkg backup, I change both Owner and Group to nobody. When trying to drag the Package icon to the backup disk the Copy dialog box tells me it “can’tbe copied.”

>Also tell me what kind of disk you are trying to copy to,

IOMEGA Zip 250

>and what it's permissions are set to when you do a Get Info

Covered above.

>(and whether the "Ignore ownership.." checkbox is on or off).

I don’t see the "Ignore ownership.." checkbox.

Covered above.

Thanks again.

What happens if you don't change the owner and group (it's probably a bad idea to set them to nobody anyway)? Also, check to see if you have read permissions (hard to imagine you wouldn't).

Since I don't have a Zip drive, I can't say whether you should or shouldn't see this checkbox, but just to make sure - you would see it in the Get Info window for the Zip disk itself - not the Get Info window you might be looking at for the .pkg file...

Not a big deal, but a bit of a mystery...

Just as a FYI in general, the "group" settings only have real significance if more than one person uses the machine. For applications, the issue is "allowing" someone other than you to run the app. And it does get more complicated than that because of something called the "execute:" bit that is not accessible in the Finder's Get Info dialog.

As for "Ignore Ownership" this is for Get Info/Ownership & Permissions on a volume (like your hard disk or a zip disk). Supposedly, if this option is checked/enabled, files you copy to it will retain the original group settings (I think that's how it's supposed to go). In reality, there does seem to be a Finder bug that files copied to that volume seem to have their groups set to "unknown," which is essentially none. As I said, this ONLY makes a difference if more than one person uses a machine running X.
