I use a shorthand based on Phillips’s system (circa 1900) in which “t”is used for the most common word in English, namely “the.” When working in MS Word and I enter contractions like “won’t” and “don’t“, the shorthand glossary writes “won’the” and “don’the.” If I could specify in preferences that Spell Catcher had to see a space before a string to know that it was indeed shorthand and should be expanded, life would be just peachy keen.

Curiously, Spell Catcher does not expand “won’t” and “don’t” into “won’the” and “don’the” when I type them in this text box, or TextEdit or Eudora. It’s possible that this is a Word/spell Catcher compatibility issue and not a Spell Catcher only issue.

More curious, I use the letter dee as shorthand for “date.” But in Word, “it’d” mercifully does not expand into “it‘Tuesday, October 21, 2003 as one wants

It’s important in any case because in modern English contractions are in use everywhere except in Papal, Presidential and Prissy Professional Papers and Pronouncements.

I must grovel! I found the solution to my own problem.

It seems that I had entered the letter “tee” in the Word Autocorrect Glossary as shorthand for “the.” I removed this entry from the Word Autocorrect Glossary and it no longer expands “won’t” and “don’t” as described in my previous posting. java script:add_smilie(%22B)%22)

Sorry for the inconvenience.

William Deutchman reply:

If you turn off Autocorrect in MS Word you will not have conflicts between it and Spell Catcher. One of the many advantages of using Spell Catcher is that it will work with all (most) applications so it is unnecessary to learn and use different spell programs or do without. If there is some reason why you still need Autocorrect, I'd like to know. Maybe there is a good reason that I should know about or that Spell Catcher can accomplish the same result.

What do you mean by this? I'd like to know because it sounds interesting.

Thanks
