I frequently need to replace recurring text fragments. This includes the need to replace or insert TAB, RETURN, and possibly other non a-z, 0-9 characters.

I always say to use the best/right too for the job - in this case it sounds like BBEdit would be the thing to try. It can do that kind of thing better than Spell Catcher ever could.
