Evan,
You should know that the problems occurred while my caps key was in the locked position. So far nothing strange happens when it's unlocked.

OK, this is a good clue. Still not totally sure what's going on - at least not until I can reproduce it myself. Problem is, I don't have a copy of FreeHand MXa - hopefully they have a demo I can install to test with.
If there is any sort of control over these keyboard shortcuts within the FreeHand MXa app itself, perhaps see if playing with it somehow helps.
So let me get this totally straight: If caps lock is down, and you type command-space or command-option-space in FreeHand MXa, you get the "caps lock depressed" sound? And it only happens in this one app?
Here's another thing to look at: Open the Keyboard Viewer (turn it on in the input menu if necessary), reproduce the problem. Watch carefully - see if for some strange reason FreeHand is modifying the state of caps lock on its own when you do this (shot in the dark, but all I can think of to try at this moment).

FreeHand does allow the user to change keyboard shortcut commands, but I am too used to the command spacebar combination to change using that at this time.
To answer your "So let me get this totally straight" question: That is what happens, but not every time. It happens about once every 30 times. And so far only with FHMXa, but I don't usually have the caps lock key depressed all the time with other applications. This is what I need to test more. Photoshop and Illustrator both use the command spacebar combination for zooming so they too may be good for testing this problem.
I took a look with the keyboard viewer and what I did notice is that my input menu was cycling between SCX and U.S., which I have not noticed before, so I went into the Keyboard Shortcuts system preferences and turn off those commands. I must have missed this when you suggested it before, or somehow it go turned on again. I'll test more.
You should also keep this in mind: My desire for this feature was to notify me when the caps key was accidentally depressed. Your implementation does that. Thanks.
