Updating language plug-ins

New for Spell Catcher X 10.4

Some features have been added to the Get Updates and Languages window for Spell Catcher X 10.4. We’re planning on more improvements, but here’s our advice for updating all your installed language plug-ins for Spell Catcher X 10.4. Improvements in Spell Catcher X 10.4 include appropriately setting the default button when an update is selected. If the selected update can be downloaded directly, the default button is Download…, otherwise More Info… is the default. Double-clicking a download will now perform the default button’s action.

Recommended (Fastest, Easiest) Procedure

If you own (have purchased) any extra-cost language plug-ins, refresh your license, and you will be able to download that language from the Get Updates and Languages window. Read more about downloading extra-cost languages.

  • In the Spell Catcher application, choose Spell Catcher > Get Updates and Languages.
  • If you need to update a number of standard language, look for the “All Standard Languages” item, and double-click to download it. IF you only need to update one or two standard languages, double-click to download each one.
  • For each installed extra-cost language, double-click it in the list to download it.
  • Each downloaded language installer should automatically open in the Finder.
  • Quit the Spell Catcher application (Spell Catcher > Quit).
  • In the Finder window for each language installer, double-click the “Easy Install” application.
  • Click Run, and choose to install the language(s). Eject the installation disk once the installation completes.
  • Repeat the above two steps for each downloaded language installer.
  • Open the Spell Catcher application once all languages are installed, and each disk is ejected.

It Should be Easier!

We realize this process should (and can) be made easier. There simply wasn’t time to do all we wanted in Spell Catcher X 10.4. The plan for a future 10.4.x update is to improve things by:

  • Making it possible to select multiple updates at once, and download them with a single click.
  • Where multiple languages are going to be installed, make it possible to select those you actually want to install.
  • Currently, hovering the mouse over an update shows a tool tip with detailed information about that update. It would be better to display this in a more obvious way, perhaps in a text area below the list.
  • Your suggestions are welcome. In the Spell Catcher application, choose Help > Send Feedback by E-Mail and send them to us!

Of course, we realize it would truly be best if language plug-ins could be downloaded and installed “live”—while the Spell Catcher application is open, directly over your existing installed languages. At this time, due to the architecture of the linguistic software (Proximity Linguistic System) that Spell Catcher uses, along with the way spelling services integrate with the Mac OS X built-in spell checker, well, we haven’t found a safe, reliable way to do this. But we’ll keep looking into it.
