If you are still using Spell Catcher X 10.2, update your installation to the most recent version. Numerous simplifications and other improvements related to licensing the software were made in Spell Catcher X 10.2.1 and 10.2.2.

It's possible to license Spell Catcher X 10.2.1 (and later) with a couple clicks of the mouse. No copy and paste, no drag and drop, no typing whatsoever (these methods still work, of course, but why bother?). Spell Catcher X recognizes two different types of URLs so that you can simply click a special link to get your license key or use an existing key you've saved as a backup.

The e-mail you get when you purchase a license, the e-mail you send yourself from Lost License Codes, and the backup document containing your license information saved from the License Manager window now contain one or more Click here links to automagically enter your license information or add your license key.

Yes, you can actually click the above "Click here" link to see this in action, but it doesn't contain any valid license information!

Requesting your "X102" License Key

  • Use the "Click here" link that's in the e-mail your receive when you purchased your license, or in the e-mail you receive from Lost License Codes.
OR Select (at least) the three lines containing your Name, E-Mail and License in the e-mail you received when you purchased your license (or from the backup document, or any other document that contains them). Drag and drop them onto the License Manager window.
    IMPORTANT NOTE:
When using paste or drag and drop, the entire License Manager window is the target.
  • A sheet appears where you can choose whether to download your key, or e-mail it to yourself by visiting a form on our web site. The fastest and easiest way is to click Download My License. If you are behind a firewall or your access to the Internet is restricted to specific applications, you will probably have to use the Via E-Mail method. If you purchased multiple license at the same time, they will all appear in the pop-up menu attached to the "X102" License: field. Choose the one you want to use for this installation.
  • Just before your license key is added, a sheet appears with any options available for that key. Click Save my Licensing Instructions to save a document containing a backup of your key and licensing information. This is useful if you need to (re)license the software and you aren't connected to the Internet, or if you want to request a key for one of your other computers.
  • If you are logged in with administrator privileges, you can choose to make the license available to all users of your computer from the Licensed For: menu.
  • After you click Add, you will see your shiny new "X102", blue arrow, non-expiring license in the list, and the caption will read Software Licensed.

Licensing the Software with an "scxkey" Attachment

If you chose to get your key via e-mail, and chose to attach it as a file, you can license your installation of Spell Catcher X 10.2 simply by double-clicking it (from most e-mail applications) or dropping it onto the License Manager window. The exact same goes for the attachment that's saved in a backup key document.

Refreshing Your License

  • If you purchase (or have purchased) an extra-cost language plug-in, refresh your license, and you will be able to download that language from the Get Updates and Languages window. Read more about downloading extra-cost languages.
  • If your license becomes invalid due to a change in your installation id, simply select it and refresh it to (re) license the software.
  • There are a variety of different types of licenses available, and certain features of Spell Catcher X can be enabled or disabled for a specific license. For example, our new "Basic" license has Ghostwriter, Modify Selection, and interactive Completion disabled, and allows the use of U.S. English references only. When an upgrade from a "Basic" license to our standard license is purchased, refreshing that license key is all that's required to activate these features.
  • When you refresh your license key, you would normally choose to replace the existing key (the default option).

Features of the License Manager Window

  • Save a backup document with your license information and key by dragging any valid license from the list to the Finder, or by selecting your license in the list and choosing the Save As command from the File menu.
  • Select Show active licenses only, and only active or otherwise in-use licenses are visible (the default). Deselect it to see any trial, expired, already-upgraded "SCX" licenses, or licenses for other installations (if such licenses are no longer in effect or otherwise needing attention).
  • The Request Key button will change to read Refresh Key if a valid, refresh-able "X102" license is selected in the list.
  • The Request Key button will change to read Upgrade License if a valid, upgrade-able "SCX" license is selected in the list. It doesn't matter if the "SCX" license that's selected has expired. You can always (re)upgrade your "SCX" license.
  • The Status column displays an icon to indicate the status of a license key. Hover the mouse over the Status column/icon to see a tool tip with more details.
    • A blue arrow License Active indicates that a license is in use and valid.
    • A red arrow License Needs Attention indicates that a license is in use, but may need "attention".
    • A note icon License Note indicates that a license needs to be refreshed.
    • A circled arrow License Needs Upgrading indicates that a license needs to be upgraded for use with this version of Spell Catcher X.
    • An email icon License Contact Us indicates that a license needs special handling, and you should click the Contact Us button.
  • If you are unsure whether you have successfully licensed the software, well, don't be! If the caption at the top of the window reads Software Licensed., your copy of Spell Catcher X is, well, licensed.
  • Any additional or restricted features of a license are displayed in the caption below the list when you select it.

Upgrading Your "SCX" License

If you need to add your "SCX" license code for some reason, click Help (?) in the License Manager window, then click Add "SCX" License.

  • Use the "Click here" link that's in the e-mail your receive when you purchased the upgrade, or in the e-mail you receive from Lost License Codes.
    OR
Select the "SCX" license that needs upgrading in the list. Click Upgrade License.
Use both if you'd like.
  • The remaining steps are the same as described above - choose to save a backup, choose the scope of the license being added.
