To view these settings, click Interactive in the toolbar at the top of the Preferences window. As you'll find out, Spell Catcher's interactive checking mode can automatically correct many more errors than simple spelling problems.
Interactive features enabled. This checkbox lets you enable/disable Interactive features when Spell Catcher has been selected in the Input menu.
Ignore the most recently-typed word when followed by: lets you specify keystrokes to signal Spell Catcher to ignore the last word typed.
Make replacements directly (without backspacing) where possible. Uses advanced text input technologies on Mac OS X 10.3 and later to make interactive corrections and shorthand expansions instantaneously. This is supported in most Cocoa applications, and in some Carbon applications that uses standard Mac OS X text editing controls and views.
Check spelling as you type. This checkbox is equivalent to selecting Interactive Checking from the Input menu.
Check spelling of word pairs. When selected, word pairs will be checked during interactive checking.
Showing suggestions: Automatically, using When selected, suggestions will automatically be shown during interactive checking. Choose the way you want suggestions displayed by selecting either Suggest Spelling window or Pop-up suggestions list.
Suggest Spelling window: On this tab, you can choose the way the Suggest Spelling window behaves.
Keystrokes go to the Suggest Spelling window. Tells Spell Catcher that whatever you type when the Suggest Spelling window automatically opens is directed to it rather than your document window.
Automatically open near the error. In those applications that support input methods, you can check this box to have the Suggest Spelling window open in the vicinity of the error on your screen.
Closes when no errors remain. As described in "Choose a replacement spelling," earlier in this chapter, Spell Catcher's Interactive Checking mode can track multiple errors in a single session of typing. When you finally open the Suggest Spelling window, you can select corrected spellings for one error after another. Turn on this option if you'd like the suggestions window to close automatically after Spell Catcher has corrected the last error.
Always closes after making a replacement. Turn on this option if you'd like the suggestions window to close every time you choose a suggestion, even if more errors are being tracked.
Pop-up suggestions list: On this tab, you can choose the way the Pop-up suggestions list behaves.
Wait (this many) seconds before opening. Setting longer wait times may be less distracting if you are a fast typist. Tune to your liking.
Fade in. Check this to have the suggestions list appear in a more "gentle" manner.
Stay open for (how many) words Choose how many words you can type, after the suggestions list automatically opens, before it disappears.
Spacebar chooses selected suggestion. By default, return and enter will chose the selected suggestion. Check this box if you would like the spacebar to behave the same way.
Suppress tab, return and enter before automatically showing suggestions. Useful in cell and field-based applications. Checking this box makes it possible to correct an error if it's the last word you type before moving to the next field or cell by preventing movement out of that field or cell.
“Smart” quotes and punctuation. When this option is turned on, Spell Catcher automatically replaces the straight quotes you type (both single and double) with professional looking, typographically and linguistically correct curly quotes. In some languages, Spell Catcher will substitute "regular" punctuation with the "smart" equivalent. French, for instance, requires non-breaking spaces after certain punctuation characters-when this option is on, Spell Catcher will do this for you.
Consecutive hyphens toggle between em dash, en dash, and hyphen. Although you may have been typing two hyphens to indicate a dash -- like this -- for years, doing so in the computer era can make you look amateurish. After all, every Macintosh font contains the symbol for a real dash-like this-as found in professionally published documents like books and newspapers. When you turn on this option, then, Spell Catcher substitutes a typographically correct dash whenever you type a double hyphen. In fact, it also substitutes an en dash (the shorter dash use to indicate a range, as in March 15-17) when you type three hyphens in a row. (Keep typing hyphens to alternate between the longer em dash, the shorter en dash, and a hyphen.)
Fix DOubled CApitals. Turn on this option if you'd like Spell Catcher to turn words like MYlar into Mylar.
Capitalize proper names and acronyms. Turn on this option if you'd like Spell Catcher to automatically capitalize words like "canada" or acronyms like "usa" to "Canada" and "USA".
Capitalize the first word of a sentence. Turn on this option if you'd like Spell Catcher to capitalize the first letter of every sentence as you type, as well as the first letter of words that should be capitalized, such as February and Alabama.
Prevent double spaces. In the typewriter era, you were probably taught to type two spaces after a period. Today, however, the space built into every computer font is already the appropriate width-if you type two spaces after a period, the gap you create is too large. Spell Catcher, therefore, can automatically prevent you from typing more than a single space in a row-just turn on this option.
Convert fractions. When enabled, Spell Catcher will automatically convert certain fractions to their single-character equivalents.
Make Shorthand Glossary expansions as you type. Checking this box tells Spell Catcher that whenever it encounters a word you've typed in one of your Shorthand Glossaries to automatically make the substitution. Note that this is independent of the Check spelling as you type setting-you can therefore make shorthand expansions without being alerted to spelling errors.
Automatically capitalize expansions made at the beginning of a sentence. Tells Spell Catcher that the first word of a glossary expansion is to be capitalized if it begins a sentence.
Expand abbreviations defined as word pairs. Allows you to create a shorthand to correct a misplaced space character, like "andt he" -> to "and the".
Here is where you specify what items should appear in the list of completions, in what order they should appear, and whether they should appear when you choose the Complete command (On?) or when completions are shown automatically (Auto?), or both. See the Completion chapter for more detailed information about each item.
Some completion items have additional settings that appear when you select that item.
Spacebar chooses selected completion. When selected, pressing the spacebar (in addition to return and enter) will choose the selected completion.
Always suppress the keystroke that chooses a completion. If you want spaces and returns to be entered into your document after being used to choose a completion, deselect this box.
Automatically show completions after typing (count) characters. When selected, Spell Catcher will automatically show completions once you have typed the specified number of characters (not applicable to Cocoa completion).
